Fortnite, Netflix and Uber accounts being sold for just £8 on the dark web

The Independent - Tech

Login details for Fortnite, Netflix and Uber accounts are selling for as little as £8 on illicit online markets, according to dark web researchers. The latest figures come from the first annual update of the Dark Web Market Price Index, compiled by researchers at VPN site Top10VPN.com. A series of high-profile data breaches has contributed to a thriving online black market, with high profile data breaches involving the likes of British Airways and Mariott Hotels seeing logins inundate the dark web – a hidden section of the internet that is only accessible using specialist software. "This is a highly – and understandably – worrying situation for customers who might have been caught in hacks," said Simon Migliano, head of research at Top10VPN.com. "Storing payment information across a whole range of online accounts – even social media – is now par for the course for the majority of consumers as it's simply so convenient. The downside is that if a fraudster gains access to one account they then, essentially, have the keys to the kingdom."

How to set screen time limits for your children on iPhones, Android, computers, Instagram and YouTube

The Independent - Tech

Parents and experts are increasingly concerned about the damage being done to children by spending too much time looking at screens. The latest warning comes from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, which suggested that excessive use of screens could bring a whole host of negative outcomes for young people. That includes everything from bad sleep to the potential for cyber bullying, though the organisation warned that the damage might be overestimated. Helpfully, the technology industry is increasingly aware of the same problems and is trying to solve them using products. As concern has grown about the damage their products do, developers have added features that stop other features being used – monitoring how long people spend on their phones, and kicking them off when it gets too much.

Facebook is set to make gaming a key component of Messenger. An update that started rolling out to a select number of Android users this week has introduced a completely new layout for the messaging app. The social network has tidied up the chat functionality by splitting one-on-one conversations, group conversations and active friends between three tabs that sit alongside each other in a single row towards the top of the screen. Facebook says governments are using the social network to spread hoaxes

The Independent - Tech

Facebook is set to admit it has become a battleground for governments intent on manipulating public opinion in other countries for geopolitical reasons, according to a new report. The social network will outline plans to combat what it calls coordinated "information operations" funded by nations, in a report that will be published this evening, according to Reuters. The information operations go beyond fake news, with paid professionals and government employees using false accounts to maximise the circulation of hoax, inflammatory and racist stories.
