Robotics applications and jobs recruiting are multiplying exponentially as artificial intelligence (AI) breakthroughs accelerate robot improvement. This was discussed during my recent appearance on WGN Radio. The global average for industrial robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers grew from 66 in 2015 to 85 in 2017. This is according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). Robotics improvements, such as advanced machine vision and sensors as well as artificial intelligence (AI) breakthoughs have rapidly increased robot breakthroughs.

Inside a brightly decorated lab at the University of California, Berkeley, an ordinary-looking robot has developed an exceptional knack for picking up awkward and unusual objects. What's stunning, though, is that the robot got so good at grasping by working with virtual objects. The robot learned what kind of grip should work for different items by studying a vast data set of 3-D shapes and suitable grasps. The UC Berkeley researchers fed images to a large deep-learning neural network connected to an off-the-shelf 3-D sensor and a standard robot arm. When a new object is placed in front of it, the robot's deep-learning system quickly figures out what grasp the arm should use.

Robotics is the field of engineering that is focused on developing machines – usually by combining knowledge from both the field of mechanics and electronics – that are able to either fully or partly take over tasks that would normally be carried out by humans. As technology advanced, components such as processors, electric motors and different kind of sensors have become increasingly more compact and precise, stimulating the use of robotics in other fields than only that of manufacturing. Robotics, fueled by artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way we work and interact with technology.
