Morgan Freeman Will Be The Voice Of Jarvis, Mark Zuckerberg's Home AI Assistant

Coming soon to a tech billionaire's Silicon Valley home, Morgan Freeman is: Jarvis. As I wrote yesterday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has finished building Jarvis, his home AI assistant. Among other things, the system can turn lights on and off, play music based on the personal tastes of both him and wife Priscilla Chan, automatically open their front gate for friends, make toast, and even wake up their one-year-old daughter Max with Mandarin lessons. The system was inspired by Tony Stark's Jarvis AI, from the Iron Man movies. Stark, of course, is played by Robert Downey, Jr., and after Zuckerberg asked the public in October who should be the voice, Downey himself volunteered, saying he would "do it in a heartbeat" if actor Paul Bettany, the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man films, got paid and the resulting money went to a charity of Benedict Cumberbatch's choice.

Mark Zuckerberg introduces cheeky AI assistant voiced by Morgan Freeman

Over the past year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took on a new project: building a home artificial intelligence (AI) system. His AI assistant, Jarvis, who makes toast for his wife Priscilla and plays music for his daughter Max, is voiced by none other than actor and beekeeper Morgan Freeman. Zuckerberg's goal for 2016 was to create an AI system "to run my home and help me with my work." His project seems to have been quite a success: Jarvis responds to the Zuckerberg family's voice commands to perform actions like switching off lights, informing them of the day's schedule, and even entertaining baby Max with Mandarin lessons while her parents wake up. Zuckerberg captured the potential of AI in a Facebook note on the project: "AI is closer to being able to do more powerful things than most people expect – driving cars, curing diseases, discovering planets…" Zuckerberg asked the Internet who should voice his home AI, in a Facebook post, of course.

He's been the voice of God, narrated the journey of penguins, and delivered driving instructions. Now, Morgan Freeman is lending his iconic sound to Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook CEO on Tuesday introduced Jarvis, a digital butler that can do everything from controlling living room lights to entertaining baby daughter Max. Inspired by Tony "Iron Man" Stark's fictional Jarvis AI, Zuck's personal assistant can control lights, open the front gate for family and friends, make toast, and help choose daily outfits or entertain Zuckerberg's daughter, Max. Early this year, Zuckerberg announced plans to build a robot valet using technology like voice and facial recognition, data visualization, and automated nannying.

When Mark Zuckerberg wants an AI assistant, he recruits the "Voice of God." The Facebook (FB, Tech30) CEO and cofounder posted a video teasing an artificial intelligence application on Tuesday that he built for his home, voiced by none other than actor Morgan Freeman. In October, Zuckerberg asked his followers for suggestions to be the voice for Jarvis, his AI tool inspired by Iron Man. Freeman was a top pick. Zuckerberg personally called Freeman to ask him to do it.
