Long Lartin: Prison staff 'attacked with pool balls'

Up to 80 prisoners have attacked staff with pool balls at a high-security prison, the BBC understands. A source said staff at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire had retreated from E wing after inmates became violent. BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw said he understood "tornado teams" of riot officers had been sent to the prison. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said: "We are currently managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin." "We are absolutely clear that offenders who behave in this way will be punished and face spending extra time behind bars," the statement added.


Lewes Prison 'rampage' forces staff 'retreat'

Prison staff were forced to "retreat to safety" when inmates "went on the rampage" at an East Sussex jail, the Prison Officers Association has said. Cells and offices were damaged in the disorder at HMP Lewes, which POA chairman Mike Rolfe said was brought to an end by a national response unit. He said: "It's a serious disturbance when prisoners take control of a wing." The Ministry of Justice said a small number of inmates were involved adding: "The prison is completely secure." An MoJ spokesman said: "We are absolutely clear that prisoners who behave in this way will be punished and could spend significantly longer behind bars."


'Disturbance' reported at HMP Birmingham

Prison staff have withdrawn from two wings at HMP Birmingham after prison keys were stolen when an officer was "rushed" by inmates. It is understood that extra officers are on their way to reinforce prison staff and a specialist "Tornado" team of prison riot officers will be sent in. G4S, which runs the prison, said that a "low-level incident" was taking place. The Category B prison, formerly known as Winson Green, holds 1,450 inmates. It is understood the disturbance centres on wings N and P, which hold 250 prisoners, and both have been sealed off.


Feltham YOI: Prison officers attacked by teenage inmates

Thirteen prison officers had to be taken to hospital after being assaulted by teenagers at a young offenders institution (YOI), it has emerged. The officers were among about 20 staff attacked during an outbreak of violence at the weekend at Feltham YOI in west London. One officer suffered a broken nose and another was concussed after being repeatedly punched. The Prison Service said the assaults were "completely unacceptable". Several members of staff were bitten during the disturbance in the section of the YOI known as Feltham A which accommodates 150 boys, most of whom are aged 16 and 17.
