Forget AlphaGo, DeepMind has a more interesting step toward general AI

#artificialintelligence

AlphaGo and self-driving cars are amazingly clever, but neither represents a very big leap toward general artificial intelligence. Fortunately, some AI researchers are developing ways of broadening machine intelligence. The researchers at DeepMind, which created the champion Go-playing robot AlphaGo, are working on an approach that could prove significant in the quest to make machines as intelligent as we are. In two papers published this week and reported by New Scientist, researchers at the Alphabet subsidiary describe efforts to teach computers about relational reasoning, a cognitive capability that is foundational to human intelligence. Simply put, relational reasoning is the ability to consider relationships between different mental representations, such as objects, words, or ideas.

The future of the workplace virtual assistant Citrix Blogs

#artificialintelligence

The technology we use at home is slowly converging with the enterprise environment. The innovation taking place within the virtual assistant (VA) market -- and its potential to create an entirely new workplace reality -- is particularly exciting to see. Artificial intelligence-powered, voice-controlled assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, and Cortana are already commonplace in many homes. This popularity is building pressure to integrate VA functionality into enterprise technology, as well, which could significantly reconfigure and enhance the employee experience. By 2021, Gartner, Inc. predicts that "25 percent of digital workers will use a virtual employee assistant (VEA) on a daily basis. This will be up from less than 2 percent in 2019."*

The Big Read: The rise of artificial intelligence and how lives will forever be changed

#artificialintelligence

SINGAPORE: Crafted to resemble human-likeness with natural looking skin and hair, Nadine, described by its makers as a social humanoid, greets a person when he enters the room, makes eye contact and remembers his face. She smiles and listens intently as one speaks, cracking a joke occasionally. But when provoked, she gets upset too. Made in Singapore, the artificial intelligence robot, which was unveiled by the Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) Institute for Media Innovation in 2015, has made significant strides in the past three years, including the ability to recognise faces and remember conversations. Plans are underway for another public showcase next month, and researchers hope that before long, Nadine will be able to walk as well as identify and grasp objects with her hands.

Explainer: What is artificial intelligence? - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Artificial intelligence has jumped from sci-fi movie plots into mainstream news headlines in just a couple of years. And the headlines are often contradictory. AI is either a technological leap into greater prosperity or mass unemployment; it will either be our most valuable servant or terrifying master. But what is AI, how does it work, and what are the benefits and the concerns? AI is a computer system that can do tasks that humans need intelligence to do.
