Nvidia joins bidding war for chipmaker Mellanox: report


Nvidia has reportedly leaped into the Mellanox fray, taking on rival companies including Intal and Xilinx in an attempt to acquire the chipmaker. According to an unnamed source speaking to Calcalist, Nvidia has joined the race to purchase the Israeli tech giant, which develops networking technology suitable for use in data center applications. Founded in 1999, Mellanox is Nasdaq-listed and is known for manufacturing optical transceivers and end-to-end solutions for data center servers and storage systems. The company recently debuted a new range of optical transceivers and InfiniBand cables suitable for use in HPC, Hyperscale, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Mellanox's Q4 2018 earnings (.PDF) reported $42.8 million in GAAP net income, or $0.78 per diluted share, based on revenues of $290.1 million.

New University of Edinburgh supercomputer powered by Nvidia


The University of Edinburgh has received a new high-performance computing platform, dubbed Tursa, which has been optimised for computational particle physics. The new system is powered by the Nvidia HGX high performance computing platform and is the third of four DiRAC "next-generation" supercomputers announced. DiRAC is the United Kingdom's integrated supercomputing facility for theoretical modelling and HPC-based research in astronomy, cosmology, particle physics, and nuclear physics. It will run the Tursa system. Tursa will allow researchers to carry out the ultra-high-precision calculations of the properties of subatomic particles needed to interpret data from massive particle physics experiments, such as the Large Hadron Collider.

Meta says it will soon have the world's fastest AI supercomputer


My mid-2022, Meta will control what it believes will be the world's fastest AI supercomputer. Dubbed the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), the system is already running, and among the world's fastest AI supercomputers, the company said in a blog post on Monday. Development of the RSC is ongoing, but once the second phase is completed by the second half of this year, the system will deliver nearly 5 exaflops of mixed-precision compute. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is already using the supercomputer to train large models in natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision for research. The company uses large-scale AI models for ongoing priorities, such as detecting harmful content on its social platforms.

Artificial intelligence is fast becoming a part of the everyday enterprise workflow, but the computing infrastructure to support such a data-intense task must modernize. Enabling enterprise to catch the fast train to intelligent business operations are long-time partners Nvidia Corp. and Lenovo Group Ltd. "We love, from an HPC perspective, to use InfiniBand," said Scott Tease (pictured, right), general manager of HPC and AI at Lenovo. "But most enterprise clients are using Ethernet. We go to a partner that we've trusted for a very long time. And we selected the Nvidia Mellanox Ethernet switch family."

Italian Inter-University Consortium to Develop World's Fastest AI Supercomputer


NVIDIA today announced that the Italian inter-university consortium CINECA -- one of the world's most important supercomputing centers -- will use the company's accelerated computing platform to build the world's fastest AI supercomputer. The new "Leonardo" system, built with Atos, is expected to deliver 10 exaflops of FP16 AI performance to enable advanced AI and HPC converged application use cases. Featuring nearly 14,000 NVIDIA Ampere architecture-based GPUs and NVIDIA Mellanox HDR 200 Gb/s InfiniBand networking, Leonardo will propel Italy as the global leader in AI and high performance computing research and innovation. Leonardo is procured by EuroHPC, a collaboration between national governments and the European Union to develop a world-class supercomputing ecosystem and exascale supercomputing in Europe, and funded by the European Commission through the Italian Ministry of University and Research. "The EuroHPC technology roadmap for exascale in Europe is opening doors for rapid growth and innovation in HPC and AI," said Marc Hamilton, vice president of solutions architecture and engineering at NVIDIA.
