Can we ever create a truly ethical artificial intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used as an unbiased judge, for matters ranging from insurance to economic efficiency. But can it ever truly be unbiased? When Remy Descartes first wrote the phrase cogito ergo sum –'I think therefore I am'– in the 1600s, he could not have been aware of the philosophical questioning that would erupt with the onset of artificial intelligence (AI) in the 20th and 21st century. Every Google search, every video suggested on YouTube and every Siri recommendation is built on machine learning algorithms designed to learn everything about your online habits, in a bid to offer targeted content that you might like. Even outside of consumer-level decisions, AI and algorithms are increasingly being used to root out hidden meanings in billions of lines of genetic code, in the hope of finding a cure to a disease or building machines that can talk for themselves.

That moment when you realize you're exchanging emails with a robot

#artificialintelligence

Next time you schedule a meeting and an assistant named Amy or Andrew Ingram sets up the logistics, here's a pro tip: You may be chatting with a robot. And if it's one of x.ai's bots, you might never know the difference. That was my experience when I exchanged emails with "Andrew" to set up an interview with x.ai's CEO. After I emailed x.ai's press contact, she referred me to Andrew to hammer out the details. Andrew proposed a time, thanked me when I accepted and sent out a calendar invitation.

Yahoo to its users: Hackers could access your emails without a password

The Independent - Tech

Yahoo is warning customers that hackers may have been able to break into their accounts without even stealing their passwords. The attack, which has been attributed to the same "state-sponsored" hackers that were blamed for breaking into over a billion Yahoo accounts last year – the biggest hack in history – was effective between 2015 and 2016. It was first disclosed by the company last year, but users have been receiving notifications about it this week.
