AAAI was pleased to present the AAAI-08 Workshop Program, held Sunday and Monday, July 13–14, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The program included the following 15 workshops: Advancements in POMDP Solvers; AI Education Workshop Colloquium; Coordination, Organizations, Institutions, and Norms in Agent Systems, Enhanced Messaging; Human Implications of Human-Robot Interaction; Intelligent Techniques for Web Personalization and Recommender Systems; Metareasoning: Thinking about Thinking; Multidisciplinary Workshop on Advances in Preference Handling; Search in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics; Spatial and Temporal Reasoning; Trading Agent Design and Analysis; Transfer Learning for Complex Tasks; What Went Wrong and Why: Lessons from AI Research and Applications; and Wikipedia and Artificial Intelligence: An Evolving Synergy.

The program included the following 15 workshops: Advancements in POMDP Solvers; AI Education Workshop Colloquium; Coordination, Organizations, Institutions, and Norms in Agent Systems, Enhanced Messaging; Human Implications of Human-Robot Interaction; Intelligent Techniques for Web Personalization and Recommender Systems; Metareasoning: Thinking about Thinking; Multidisciplinary Workshop on Advances in Preference Handling; Search in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics; Spatial and Temporal Reasoning; Trading Agent Design and Analysis; Transfer Learning for Complex Tasks; What Went Wrong and Why: Lessons from AI Research and Applications; and Wikipedia and Artificial Intelligence: An Evolving Synergy. Participants discussed various approaches to solving POMDPs, and discussed as well as potential real real-world applications of the model. The AI Education Colloquium kicked off AAAI 2008's AI Forum, a series of events on the teaching and learning of AI. The colloquium convened AI practitioners passionate about improving both their students' and their own appreciation of our field's compelling ideas. The goal of the workshop was to examine and define the current state of the art research in agent systems research related to coordination, organizations, institutions, and norming.


Interview with Falaah Arif Khan – talking security, comics and demystifying the hype surrounding AI

She currently works as a Research Engineer at Dell EMC, Bangalore, but will shortly will be heading to New York University's Center for Data Science to pursue a Master's in Data Science. We talked about some of the machine learning projects she's worked on, her comic book creations, and the need for clear and accurate communication in the field of AI. I like to describe my research area as meta-security. When customers come to us it is to enhance the security of their product through access management, service authorization, session management and/or authentication. My role within the team is to use data-driven insights to build features that will bolster the security of our Identity and Access Management (IAM) product.

The Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology (HICT) is a joint initiative by Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, the two leading universities within this area in Finland. The network involves at present over 60 professors and over 200 doctoral students, and the participating units graduate altogether more than 40 new doctors each year. The quality of research and education in both HICT universities is world-class, and the education is practically free as there are no tuition fees for doctoral students in the Finnish university system. In terms of the living environment, Helsinki has been ranked as one of the world's top-10 most livable cities (Economist, 2017), and Finland is among the best countries in the world with respect to many quality of life indicators, including being the overall #1 country in human wellbeing. Helsinki is in the second place in the world's startup city comparison (Valuer, 2018) and is also the Mobile Data Capital of the World (IEEE Spectrum, 2018). The participating units of HICT have currently funding available for exceptionally qualified doctoral students. We offer the possibility to join world-class research groups, with multiple interesting research projects to choose from. "Through making our large datasets and systems publicly available, we've enabled research groups around the world to make significant progress on building machines that can automatically answer questions about visual content," she highlights. When Thomas first started researching deep neural networks a few years ago, virtually no educational resources existed online. Suchi Saria, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University, believes computational modeling of data from sensor platforms and electronic medical records presents "a tremendous opportunity for high impact work." Since receiving her PhD in Computer Science from Stanford, Shubha Nabar has built data products and data science teams at Microsoft, LinkedIn, and now Salesforce.
