From foldable screens to 5G connectivity, to super AMOLED displays, smartphone companies are evolving and innovating faster than ever. Read on to see our top picks for the best Android phone available right now. And while you're at it, check out our tips on how to buy a new phone.

Don't want an iPhone? Here are some of the best Android alternatives

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

A hostess holds two new Samsung Galaxy S9 mobilephones during the Samsung Galaxy S9 Unpacked event on Feb. 25, 2018 in Barcelona. With Apple's next big September event looming, the eyes of the tech world, not to mention consumers looking to upgrade, are on what new iPhones the company will introduce. Those of you looking for a new iPhone should, for any number of reasons, wait until then. You should likely wait, too, if only to see the deals the other companies offer in response. If you can't wait, however, you should know that there are plenty of great options available, particularly in some of last year's top phones.

There isn't a truly complete Android experience right now

Google's I/O 2022 keynote was disappointing if you were expecting a major Android upgrade that tackled deep-seated issues, at least based on the details shared so far. The company didn't spend much time discussing Android 13, and most of the announced updates were known, minor or both. They were largely defined by media and privacy controls. The release as-is won't be a revelation unless you're a tablet owner. While we might not have seen all of Android 13's features just yet, and there are already some genuinely useful improvements (such as a brand new Wallet app), the status quo will largely remain intact.

10 best smartphones for the 2016 holiday season

There are some fantastic options in the 400 range this year with three of them making my top 10 list. I'm still partial to the expensive flagship devices, but any of these ten phones could easily satisfy just about anyone until the next new phones appear in 2017. The iPhone 7 Plus is the best iPhone, as it should be. You won't find a BlackBerry or Nokia phone on my list this year, but Motorola and HTC are still competing well with others.

2021 Winners and losers: Google

It was a very good year for Google, but especially for its mobile division. The jury's still out on whether hardware sales will match the quality of its latest phones but in all cases the phones we saw from Google in 2021 deserve respect. Google's custom-developed chip Tensor is probably the company's biggest win. It enables advancements in machine learning and computational photography that Google wouldn't have been able to achieve by using an off-the-shelf Qualcomm chip. The processor has two Cortex-X1 cores, instead of the usual one, which means the Tensor is plenty powerful.
