Big-brother pizza: Domino’s to track customers on way to stores


Checking the progress online of your home-delivery pizza is so 2006. Now you're being tracked, too. Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd., Australia's largest pizza company, will on Monday start using satellites to follow customers as they approach stores to pick up orders. By tracking pizza-lovers on the street, Domino's can wait until the last moment to start cooking and ensure orders stay fresh, the company said Thursday. The fast-food surveillance measure comes a decade after Domino's started to let customers track their own orders.

As the severe recession took hold in 2008, Domino's Pizza Inc. was sinking as well. The pizza delivery chain was under siege for its lousy food and mediocre service. Complaints poured in that a Domino's pizza crust tasted like cardboard and its tomato sauce like ketchup. Investors weren't happy, either; in late 2008, Domino's stock had fallen to a paltry $3.85 a share. Domino's even aired television ads acknowledging its problems, a public mea culpa in which the chain promised to do better.

Domino's Uses AI for Pizza Points Loyalty Play


In an attempt to earn customer loyalty heading into the Super Bowl pizza rush, Domino's is offering members of its Points for Pies rewards program a chance to earn points without having to buy a pizza from the chain. Domino's Senior Vice President and Chief Brand Officer Art D'Elia said in an announcement for the offering, "Instead of advertising during Sunday's game, we decided to invest in a breakthrough program." To receive the promotion, diners download the QSR's app and sign up for its rewards program. They can then use a "newly embedded pizza identification feature to scan their pizza" and earn 10 points from the company. Customers then redeem 60 points for a medium two-topping pizza at the restaurant chain.

Domino's removes laborious one-click barrier to pizza with new zero-click purchase


Apparently the one-click order, popularized by Amazon to allow consumers to skip the shopping cart and payment-input process during online shopping, wasn't easy enough for Domino's. On Thursday, the pizza peddler announced a new zero-click order process, coming soon to its mobile app. SEE ALSO: Big-brother pizza: Domino's to track customers on way to stores When you open the app, it will automatically place an order for you, based on your previous order or your favorite pie, CNBC reported. The app has a 10-second countdown to let you modify or cancel the order in case you just accidentally pocket-ordered lunch. Of course, if you don't want this functionality, you can disable it when the update comes.
