You go around a curve, and suddenly see something in the middle of the road ahead. Of course, the answer depends on what that'something' is. A torn paper bag, a lost shoe, or a tumbleweed? You can drive right over it without a second thought, but you'll definitely swerve around a pile of broken glass. You'll probably stop for a dog standing in the road but move straight into a flock of pigeons, knowing that the birds will fly out of the way.

In one of Aesop's fables, a thirsty crow finds a pitcher with a small amount of water beyond the reach of its beak. After failing to push the pitcher over, the crow drops pebbles in one by one until the water level rises, allowing the bird to have a drink. For Aesop, the fable showed the superiority of intelligence over brute strength. Two and a half millennia later, we might get to see whether AI could pass Aesop's ancient intelligence test. In June, researchers will train algorithms to master a suite of tasks that have traditionally been used to test animal cognition.

AI is one of the most rapidly growing domains today. Keeping track and taking stock of AI requires not just constant attention, but also the ability to dissect and evaluate across a number of dimensions. This is exactly what Air Street Capital and RAAIS founder Nathan Benaich and AI angel investor, and UCL IIPP Visiting Professor Ian Hogarth have done. In the aptly titled State of AI Report 2019 published on June 28, Benaich and Hogarth embark on a 136-slide long journey on all things AI: technology breakthroughs and their capabilities, supply, demand and concentration of talent working in the field, large platforms, financing and areas of application for AI-driven innovation today and tomorrow, special sections on the politics of AI, and AI in China. Benaich and Hogarth are more than venture capitalists: They both have extensive AI background, having worked on a number of AI initiatives, from research to startups.


Common Sense Data Acquisition for Indoor Mobile Robots

Common sense knowledge can be efficiently collected from non-experts over the web in a similar fashion to the Open Mind family of distributed knowledge capture projects. We describe the collection of common sense data through the Open Mind Indoor Common Sense (OMICS) website. We restrict the domain to indoor home and office environments to obtain dense knowledge. The knowledge was collected through sentence templates that were generated dynamically based on previous user input. Entries were converted into relations and saved into a database. We discuss the results of this online collaborative effort and describe two applications of the collected data to indoor mobile robots. We discuss active desire selection based on current beliefs and commands and a room-labeling application based on probability estimates from the common sense knowledge base.
