Japan's Uzabase to acquire online news platform Quartz

The Japan Times

Media startup Uzabase is acquiring Quartz, a New York-based online business news platform, from Atlantic Media. The Japanese firm's deal with the U.S. media company is valued at $75 million to $110 million, depending on Quartz's financial performance, and expected to close within the next 30 days, both sides said Monday. Under the deal, Quartz will handle the English-language version of NewsPicks, Uzabase's subscription-based business news platform designed for mobile devices. The companies have been discussing a partnership since last fall. NewsPicks, launched in 2013, entered the U.S. market last year as a joint venture with Dow Jones.

This robot can fly in a cave by itself

A new flying robot AI system developed by Exyn Technologies can map dark, dangerous places like caves and old mines. The drones map caves autonomously using LIDAR technology (radar that uses light from a laser) and recreate the world around them in a 3D image. The flying robots will help improve safety for workers in dangerous, unmapped places like caves, mines, or construction sites.
