At least 32 killed after Turkish cargo plane crashes near Kyrgyzstan airport

FOX News

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – The Health Ministry in Kyrgyzstan says a cargo plane has crashed in a residential area just outside the Central Asian country's main airport, killing 32 people. The ministry said Monday that the Turkish airline Boeing 747 crash-landed just outside the Manas airport, south of the capital Bishkek, killing at least 15 people in a residential area adjacent to the airport as well as 17 people onboard the plane. Local emergency services are working on the scene. Until 2014, the U.S. military operated a military installation at the Manas airport, using it primarily for its operations in Afghanistan.

Long Beach Airport isn't ready to give Uber and Lyft a green light

Los Angeles Times

Car-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft can pick up and drop off fliers at most major airports in Southern California, but the city of Long Beach isn't ready to allow such drivers to pick up at the Long Beach Airport. In a meeting last week, the Long Beach City Council was set to consider a nine-month pilot program to let Uber, Lyft and other car-hailing services pick up travelers at the Long Beach Airport. Instead of adopting the motion, the Long Beach council voted unanimously to ask city administrators to delay the proposal for 90 days to get the input of cab companies, car rental firms and the public. For now, car services can drop off customers at any airport but must enter into an agreement with the airports to pick up travelers at the terminals. Car-hailing companies have reached such agreements with Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and San Diego International Airport.

A World-Class Airport for the End of the World

The Atlantic - Technology

Stocking up on supplies--water, batteries, food staples-- as tropical storm Gordon loomed over the Gulf, I was struck by a familiar sound in the sky as I loaded bags into my car: a bank of airliners forming a loose arc as they slanted down toward the airport, descending one at a time to land. While the city of New Orleans braced for the worst, life at the airport went on as usual. Gordon ended up missing us completely, having fizzled out after making landfall well east of the city. New Orleans is safe, for now, but hurricane season lingers on through November. And let's not even talk about 2019, when the storms could strengthen.
