Response to Comment on "Active sites for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on Cu/ZnO catalysts"

In their Comment on the our recent Report, Nakamura et al. argue that our x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was affected by the presence of formate species on the catalyst surface. This argument is not valid because the reactant gases were evacuated at temperatures from 525 to 575 kelvin, conditions under which formate is not stable on the catalyst surface. An analysis of the XPS results obtained after exposing zinc oxide/copper (111) [ZnO/Cu(111)] surfaces to hydrogen (H2) and mixtures of carbon dioxide (CO2)/H2 show an absence of carbon (C) 1s signal, no asymmetries in the oxygen (O) 1s peak, and a Zn:O intensity close to 1:1. Thus, the most active phase of these catalysts contained a ZnO-Cu interface.


[Report] Photochemical route for synthesizing atomically dispersed palladium catalysts

Science

Atomically dispersed noble metal catalysts often exhibit high catalytic performances, but the metal loading density must be kept low (usually below 0.5%) to avoid the formation of metal nanoparticles through sintering. We report a photochemical strategy to fabricate a stable atomically dispersed palladium–titanium oxide catalyst (Pd1/TiO2) on ethylene glycolate (EG)–stabilized ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets containing Pd up to 1.5%. The Pd1/TiO2 catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity in hydrogenation of C C bonds, exceeding that of surface Pd atoms on commercial Pd catalysts by a factor of 9. No decay in the activity was observed for 20 cycles. More important, the Pd1/TiO2-EG system could activate H2 in a heterolytic pathway, leading to a catalytic enhancement in hydrogenation of aldehydes by a factor of more than 55.


'Mirror's Edge Catalyst' gets delayed once again

EA will release Mirror's Edge Catalyst on June 7th in North America and June 9th across Europe, a delay of two weeks. This is the second time Catalyst has been delayed; the first re-scheduling pushed the game's release back three months, from February 23rd to May 24th. In the first instance, DICE Senior Producer Sara Jansson said the team needed more time to polish the game's mechanics. This time around, Design Director Erik Odeldahl says DICE needs more time to work on Social Play features.


[Report] A bioinspired iron catalyst for nitrate and perchlorate reduction

Microorganisms have evolved sophisticated enzymatic machinery to reduce perchlorate and nitrate ions. Although the energetics of the pathways are different, the heme-containing active sites of the corresponding reductase enzymes are remarkably similar. Ford et al. constructed an inorganic catalyst to mediate these reactions based on these active sites, using a nonheme iron complex. A secondary coordination sphere near the iron center aligned the nitrate or perchlorate oxyanions and formed an iron-oxo complex. Regenerating the catalyst in the presence of protons and electrons released water--a potentially much more sustainable process than reduction strategies that require the use of harsh reagents.
