Global cyber attack is a new version of the 'Wannacry' virus that took down the NHS, Ukrainian official says

The Independent - Tech

An adviser to Ukraine's interior minister said a version of the "WannaCry" ransomware had caused outages on government websites and those of several companies, a cyber attack he called the worst in Ukraine's history. The hack began in the country but has since spread across the world, hitting companies as widely as Danish shipping company Maersk and British advertising company WPP, the biggest in the world. Adviser Anton Gerashchenko said Ukrainian IT systems had been targeted with "Cryptolocker" a version of WannaCry, the virus that locked up more than 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries in May. The ransomware that is wreaking havoc on NHS computers is believed to be using an NSA cyber-weapon leaked in WikiLeaks' Vault 7 release earlier this year. Malware called Wanna Detector is preventing hospital staff from accessing medical records. Hospitals in both England and Scotland are known to be affected. A patients group says cyber criminals were able to conduct today's large-scale attack on the NHS because of the organisation's outdated IT practices. The NHS and other organisations have been warned about the possibility of a nightmare cyber attack for years. NHS hack: Cyber attack takes 16 hospitals offline as patients are turned away

The Independent - Tech

At least 16 hospitals are having to reject patients after their systems were taken offline. A huge cyber attack has infected NHS trusts across the country and has led to all digital systems being pulled down. The ransomware threatens hospitals that they will lose access to patient records and other files if they don't pay money to the hackers. NHS cyber attack: Large-scale hack forces hospitals across England to divert emergency patients

The Independent - Tech

Hospitals across England have been hit by a huge cyber attack, plunging the NHS into chaos. IT systems appear to have broken and emergency patients are having to be diverted to other areas, according to doctors. The hack appears to be an example of ransomware – malicious hackers breaking into computers and only allowing their owners back in when they pay enough money.
