After a very soft launch on Nov. 23 had Australians wondering if they'd see Amazon up and running before Christmas, the company has finally, officially launched in Australia. SEE ALSO: Amazon's Alexa and Echo to finally launch in Australia and New Zealand One of the biggest things to happen to Australia's retail sector, Amazon's website has switched over from a Kindle Store presence to its fully fledged Amazon.com.au, with millions of products now ready for eager Christmas shoppers across more than 20 categories. It's a huge moment for Australian retail, and one of the most anticipated launches of the year, after Amazon confirmed in April 2017 it would expand its operations in Australia. Local retailers like David Jones and Myer have been scrambling to launch their own "premium" in-store services and price matching strategies or revamped online stores ahead of Amazon's arrival. Thousands of Australian brands have already signed up with Amazon to sell their wares locally and internationally.
Today, I'm excited to share that, for the first time, the same machine learning courses used to train engineers at Amazon are now available to all developers through AWS. We've been using machine learning across Amazon for more than 20 years. With thousands of engineers focused on machine learning across the company, there are very few Amazon retail pages, products, fulfillment technologies, stores which haven't been improved through the use of machine learning in one way or another. Many AWS customers share this enthusiasm, and our mission has been to take machine learning from something which had previously been only available to the largest, most well-funded technology companies, and put it in the hands of every developer. Thanks to services such as Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Rekognition, Amazon Comprehend, Amazon Transcribe, Amazon Polly, Amazon Translate, and Amazon Lex, tens of thousands of developers are already on their way to building more intelligent applications through machine learning.
Few things in life are as universally satisfying as a boycott. To the left, a boycott is the ultimate display of society in action; to the right, it confirms the market's all-consuming power. It's negging, basically – if you love something, ignore it until it comes cowering back promising to do better. My list of personal boycotts is long and fluid.
