Microsoft Teams: Now teachers can monitor students' reading fluency with AI

The Reading Progress tool in Microsoft Teams is rolling out globally. Microsoft has rolled out Reading Progress, a free education tool for Teams that gives teachers artificial intelligence (AI) estimations of student performance and errors when reading text. The Teams app aims to help teachers quickly assess students' fluency at reading through video and audio recordings. It could be a handy online tool for teachers delivering remote education for the first time, as well as for those who provided remote learning before the pandemic. The app lets teachers upload a single reading fluency passage for the whole class, or provide different passages to suit students at various reading levels.

How Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning will further advance Ed-tech sector?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are the current hot assets of technology and disrupting almost all possible domains and sectors, including education. However, not many of us are aware that much of AI's theoretical and technological underpinning dates back to nearly seven decades ago, thanks to scientists such as Alan Turing, Marvin Minsky, and John McCarthy. In simple terms, AI is a sequence of technologies that power machines to function with higher intelligence levels, almost emulating human capabilities. As matter of fact, Artificial Intelligence has had a profound impact on the nature of services within the education sector. With respect to developing economies, the population's education and literacy levels play a significant role in the overall transition to an advanced economy.

Is "a lack of educational materials" true in an Edtech age?

It's hard for a person in a developed country to conceptualize that a textbook could be so outdated, dirty and dog-eared that the six students sharing it can barely read it, but it's true. The lack of educational resources is a massive obstacle to education in many parts of the world today. In Tanzania, less than 5% of all grade 6 pupils had sole use of a reading textbook. In Cameroon, the situation is dire for primary school students where 13 grade 2 students share a math textbook while 11 students share a reading textbook.
