A Florida police officer whose photo went viral while working after Hurricane Irma has resigned amid an internal investigation into anti-Semitic comments he made on social media and allegedly having sex while on the job. Michael Hamill, a former Gainesville Police officer, resigned from the force on Dec. 6, when he was supposed to appear for an internal affairs interview, the Gainesville Sun reported. Ben Tobias, a spokesperson for the police department, said investigators were looking into anti-Semitic statements Hamill made on his personal Facebook page, as well as allegations that he had consensual sex while on duty. Tobias said both allegations could have resulted in termination.

Michael Hamill was under suspension since September. The decision came just when the Internal Affairs department was to interview him regarding the allegations. Born as Michael Gordon Hamill, the officer joined the GPD in 2016. He got married in March.
Gainesville police say in a statement that several people have brought information to the department's attention regarding a complaint against Officer Michael Hamill, the bearded officer at the center of the group selfie. The department hasn't disclosed the nature of the complaint, but The Gainesville Sun reports screen shots sent to the newspaper show anti-Semitic posts on Hamill's personal Facebook page. The Sun reports the posts were made in 2011 and 2013.
