Intel's tiny Euclid computer can be the brains of a robot

A compact computer called Euclid from Intel should make the development of robots much easier. Euclid looks much like the Kinect camera for Xbox consoles, but it's a self-contained PC that can be the guts of a robot. It's possible to install the Euclid computer where the "eyes" of a human-like robot would be typically placed. Intel demonstrated the Euclid computer in a robot moving on stage during CEO Brian Krzanich's keynote at the Intel Developer Forum on Tuesday. Euclid has a 3D RealSense camera that can serve as the eyes in a robot, capturing images in real-time.

Over the course of 18 months, a group of engineers, Rembrandt experts and data scientists analyzed 346 of Rembrandt's works, then trained a deep learning engine to "paint" in the master's signature style. In order to stay true to Rembrandt's art, the team decided to flex the engine's muscles on a portrait. They analyzed the demographics of the people Rembrandt painted over his lifetime and determined that it should paint a Caucasian male between 30 and 40 years of age, complete with black clothes, a white collar and hat, and facial hair.


IBM to build quantum computers, selling machines millions of times faster than anything made before

IBM has taken its first step towards selling computers that are millions of times faster than the one you're reading this on. The company has set up a new division, IBM Q, that is intended to make quantum computers and sell them commercially. Until now, quantum computers have mostly been a much hyped but long away dream. But IBM believes they are close enough to reality to start work on getting software ready for when they become commercially available. Step counting apps might be not only a waste of time but a dangerous one, according to one expert. The fitness apps might be doing more harm than good because they don't work but force people to focus on ambitious goals that they will never reach, according to a leading computer scientist. "Very few" of the roughly 165,000 healthcare apps are actually based on any scientific evidence, said Dr Greg Hager, from Johns Hopkins University in the US. But they have been downloaded more than a billion times by people looking to improve their health. Software AG acquires AI company Zementis to expand IoT capability - Computer Business Review

The acquisition will bring Zementis' predictive analytics to Software AG's real-time streaming analytics platform. Software AG has acquired California-based Zementis for an undisclosed sum in a move designed to bolster its internet of things capability. Zementis offers software for'deep learning' which plays a crucial role in the development of machine learning, data science and fundamental technology that drives artificial intelligence (AI) development. According to Software AG, the advances in machine learning and AI are being applied in the next generation Internet of Things (IoT) such as self-driving cars, personal digital assistants, medical diagnosis, predictive maintenance and robotics. Software AG has already employed Adaptive Decision and Predictive Analytics (ADAPA) from Zementis into its Digital Business Platform to offer its clients with comprehensive insights for real time business analytics.
