Football: Cathedral Coach Kevin Pearson is suspended for shoving incident

Los Angeles Times

Cathedral Coach Kevin Pearson said Monday night that he has been suspended by his administration for one week for his actions in shoving one of his players on Friday night near the conclusion of his team's 24-17 victory over St. Francis. Pearson said he was wrong in the way he acted. He will not be allowed to attend practices this week or attend Friday's Angelus League game against Harvard-Westlake. Line coach David Torres will be the acting head coach. Pearson was seen shoving one of his players who had tried to restrain him from going after an official.

Pearson turns artificial intelligence attention to essay marking

Having used IBM's Watson technology to create a virtual learning assistant, Pearson has played a significant role in driving forward the development of artificial intelligence in higher education. Now the international education company is poised to take the next step by developing an AI tool that can grade university essays. Pearson's tool, which is currently being developed for piloting in US higher education, is not the first product of its type; similar platforms have been developed at the University of Manchester and at the University of California, Berkeley. But Pearson's global reach and its experience of using Watson – which can analyse huge amounts of text and data and use this to answer complex questions in natural language – could mean that its new tool represents a significant step forward. Milena Marinova, who has been hired by Pearson from chipmaker Intel to lead its work on AI, told Times Higher Education that the new tool would be able to mark essays in a more sophisticated fashion than previous grading assistants.

Kings look for more consistent production from linemates Pearson and Toffoli

Los Angeles Times

The onus is on Pearson and Toffoli for more consistent production, and the organization has shown faith in them since it signed both to extensions in a two-month span in 2017. It should help to have an injury-free Carter anchoring them again. Pearson fell from 24 goals to 15 last season, although his forecheck was effective. He did not score a goal in February, and was scoreless in the final 13 regular-season and playoff games.

The Kings' Tanner Pearson will face an NHL hearing over a hit in game with Edmonton

Los Angeles Times

Kings left wing Tanner Pearson is to have a hearing for a check to the head of Edmonton Oilers defenseman Brandon Davidson, according to the NHL's Department of Player Safety. The incident occurred in the Kings-Oilers preseason game Sunday in Vernon, Canada. Pearson was ejected from the game and Davidson did not return. Davidson's status is day to day, according to the Oilers. This is Pearson's first brush with the NHL's hearing process, a fact that could help lighten a possible suspension.
