Algorithms That Learn with Less Data Could Expand AI's Power

#artificialintelligence

Last year Microsoft and Google both showed that their image-recognition algorithms had learned to best humans. They independently created software that could exceed the average human score on a standard test that challenges software to recognize images of a thousand different objects, from mosques to mosquitoes. But to get good enough to defeat humanity, each company's software scrutinized 1.2 million labeled images. A child can learn to recognize a new kind of object or animal using only one example. Startup Geometric Intelligence said Monday that it has developed machine-learning software that is a much quicker study.

Remember when software was eating the world? The trendy observation these days is that artificial intelligence (AI) is eating software. Even Google CEO Sundar Pichai has talked about software that "automatically writes itself." And certainly if you consider software development to be little more than the creation of oft-repeated segments of code, then the rapid advances in AI would give software engineers pause.

Artificial Intelligence Software has become an integral part of business software and is projected to continue dominating the software market in the foreseeable future. AI software incorporates machine learning (ML) and deep learning into its functionality with an aim to better automate user tasks, save time & energy, make jobs simpler, and boost productivity. Companies can derive the latest technological benefits from cloud-based AI. AI systems provide a wide range of benefits to businesses, such as personalized marketing, customer service, operational automation, inventory management, and recruitment. Nowadays, many AI apps are designed specifically for cloud-based systems, making them quick and easy to deploy.

How AI is Changing Software Development

Part of the promise of artificial intelligence is that it will impact how software is developed. Disruptive technologies have become commonplace in the software industry, and lately, artificial intelligence (AI) is on many companies' radars. The month of November 2016 alone saw much activity in the AI space, including Amazon launching an AI platform; General Electric acquiring two AI startups to help it try and compete with IBM's Watson; Google launching an AI group for its cloud, and an AI startup backed by entrepreneur Elon Musk signing a cloud agreement with Microsoft. All of this comes on the heels of a report released earlier last fall by the Obama administration's National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Technology examining potential use cases of AI. The study, "Preparing For the Future of Artificial Intelligence," observes that AI-related technologies already "have opened up new markets and new opportunities for progress in critical areas such as health, education, energy, and the environment."
