The iPhone 8 is rumored to come with wireless charging technology, which could include a standalone charging accessory. However, Apple blogger John Gruber said the accessory might not launch September with the iPhone. Gruber said he heard the accessory will be sold separately and will not come included with the smartphone and that it would be released when iOS 11.1 launches. "I've heard that inductive charging will (a) be sold separately, and (b) might be late, waiting for iOS 11.1 (a la Portrait mode last year)," said Gruber in a tweet picked up by MacRumors. The tweet comes after KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a research note recently the upcoming iPhone 8, iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus will feature glass bodies for WPC-standard (Wireless Power Consortium) wireless charging functionality.
A Barclays analyst said in a research note the iPhone 8 will come with a faster USB-C connector, MacRumors reported. Analyst Blayne Curtis said the 10th anniversary iPhone will come with a 10W power adapter with USB-C connector and an integrated USB-C Power Delivery chip. Cypress Semiconductor will supply Apple with USB-C Power Delivery chips. The analyst suggested the chips in the upcoming iPhone will be the same one used in the recent 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The iPhone 8 would be able to charge quickly with a USB-C to Lightning Cable connected to the 10W power adapter or with the 29W USB-C power adapter that works for MacBooks.
Case manufacturer Olixar revealed its complete line of cases for this year's iPhone 8, which shows the back and front of the device, 9to5Mac reported. Olixar based the design on "information and schematics they've acquired through their factories and contacts in the Far East," MobileFun, the company selling the cases, told 9to5mac. MobileFun has already started accepting preorders for the iPhone 8 cases, which vary from $10.99 to $26.49. Apple will likely reveal the iPhone 8 in less than a couple of weeks during the company's press event on September 12. The gathering was announced in media invites, according to Apple Insider. The event will take place at 10 a.m PST in the Steve Jobs Theater at the new Apple Park campus in Cupertino, Calif., a picture of the invite shows. Samsung is said to be the OLED display supplier for Apple. Apple reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth $9 billion with Samsung for OLED panels.
