MIT has announced the launch of the MIT AI Hardware Program, which will include five inaugural companies joined together with the aim of advancing transformative AI technologies for the next decade. The MIT AI Hardware Program is a new academia and industry collaboration aimed at defining and developing translational technologies in hardware and software for the AI and quantum age. A collaboration between the MIT School of Engineering and MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, involving the Microsystems Technologies Laboratories and programs and units in the college, the cross-disciplinary effort aims to innovate technologies that will deliver enhanced energy efficiency systems for cloud and edge computing. "A sharp focus on AI hardware manufacturing, research, and design is critical to meet the demands of the world's evolving devices, architectures, and systems," says Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the MIT School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. "Knowledge-sharing between industry and academia is imperative to the future of high-performance computing."
As Road to VR notes, the VR shell isn't full functional just yet, but should be only a matter of time before it and other virtual reality features pop up in stable beta versions. With the way VR on the web currently works, you have to take off that headset when you come to a site that isn't properly equipped. However, Google's pending solution for Android mean you wouldn't have to do that as the so-called shell would accommodate those non-VR-ready sites. Samsung already built a browser for its Gear VR. Of course, that headset only works with the company's own handsets, so it's not open for a wide audience.
All GeForce Now users can play Fortnite via NVIDIA's cloud gaming service, including those with iOS and Android devices. The company started testing the game on the platform in January. It says more than 500,000 people tried it out across "hundreds of mobile device types." The full launch of Fortnite on GeForce Now means that there's no longer a waitlist and anyone can drop into a match. Feedback from beta testers helped NVIDIA optimize the touch controls and menu system.
Bright Computing, a leader in software for managing high performance computing systems used by more than 700 organizations worldwide, is now part of NVIDIA. Companies in healthcare, financial services, manufacturing and other markets use its tool to set up and run HPC clusters, groups of servers linked by high-speed networks into a single unit. Its product, Bright Cluster Manager, becomes the latest addition to NVIDIA's software stack for accelerated computing. Bright Computing, founded in 2009 and headquartered in Amsterdam, has customers that include household names such as Boeing, NASA, Johns Hopkins University and Siemens. We've been working with Bright for more than a decade as they integrated their software with our GPUs, networking, CUDA and most recently DGX systems.
