A Odor Labeling Convolutional Encoder-Decoder for Odor Sensing in Machine Olfaction

Machine olfaction is usually crystallized as electronic noses (e-noses) which consist of an array of gas sensors mimicking biological noses to'smell' and'sense' odors [1]. Gas sensors in the array should be carefully selected based on several specifications (sensitivity, selectivity, response time, recovery time, etc.) for specific detecting purposes. On the other side, some general-purpose e-noses may have an array of gas sensors that are sensitive to a variety of odorous materials so that such e-noses can be applied to many fields. An increasing number of researches and applications utilized machine olfaction in recent years. In the early 20th century, some studies applied e-noses to the analysis of products along with gas chromatography-mass spectrometers (GC-MS) [2]. Some linear methods such as principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machines (SVM), etc. were used in the analysis [3].


Calibrating chemical multisensory devices for real world applications: An in-depth comparison of quantitative Machine Learning approaches

Chemical multisensor devices need calibration algorithms to estimate gas concentrations. Their possible adoption as indicative air quality measurements devices poses new challenges due to the need to operate in continuous monitoring modes in uncontrolled environments. Several issues, including slow dynamics, continue to affect their real world performances. At the same time, the need for estimating pollutant concentrations on board the devices, espe- cially for wearables and IoT deployments, is becoming highly desirable. In this framework, several calibration approaches have been proposed and tested on a variety of proprietary devices and datasets; still, no thorough comparison is available to researchers. This work attempts a benchmarking of the most promising calibration algorithms according to recent literature with a focus on machine learning approaches. We test the techniques against absolute and dynamic performances, generalization capabilities and computational/storage needs using three different datasets sharing continuous monitoring operation methodology. Our results can guide researchers and engineers in the choice of optimal strategy. They show that non-linear multivariate techniques yield reproducible results, outperforming lin- ear approaches. Specifically, the Support Vector Regression method consistently shows good performances in all the considered scenarios. We highlight the enhanced suitability of shallow neural networks in a trade-off between performance and computational/storage needs. We confirm, on a much wider basis, the advantages of dynamic approaches with respect to static ones that only rely on instantaneous sensor array response. The latter have been shown to be best choice whenever prompt and precise response is needed.


A unified spectra analysis workflow for the assessment of microbial contamination of ready to eat green salads: Comparative study and application of non-invasive sensors

The present study provides a comparative assessment of non-invasive sensors as means of estimating the microbial contamination and time-on-shelf (i.e. storage time) of leafy green vegetables, using a novel unified spectra analysis workflow. Two fresh ready-to-eat green salads were used in the context of this study for the purpose of evaluating the efficiency and practical application of the presented workflow: rocket and baby spinach salads. The employed analysis workflow consisted of robust data normalization, powerful feature selection based on random forests regression, and selection of the number of partial least squares regression coefficients in the training process by estimating the knee-point on the explained variance plot. Training processes were based on microbiological and spectral data derived during storage of green salad samples at isothermal conditions (4, 8 and 12C), whereas testing was performed on data during storage under dynamic temperature conditions (simulating real-life temperature fluctuations in the food supply chain). Since an increasing interest in the use of non-invasive sensors in food quality assessment has been made evident in recent years, the unified spectra analysis workflow described herein, by being based on the creation/usage of limited sized featured sets, could be very useful in food-specific low-cost sensor development.


Classification via an Embedded Approach

This paper presents the results of an automated volatile organic compound (VOC) classification process implemented by embedding a machine learning algorithm into an Arduino Uno board. An electronic nose prototype is constructed to detect VOCs from three different fruits. The electronic nose is constructed using an array of five tin dioxide (SnO2) gas sensors, an Arduino Uno board used as a data acquisition section, as well as an intelligent classification module by embedding an approach function which receives data signals from the electronic nose. For the intelligent classification module, a training algorithm is also implemented to create the base of a portable, automated, fast-response, and economical electronic nose device. This solution proposes a portable system to identify and classify VOCs without using a personal computer (PC). Results show an acceptable precision for the embedded approach in comparison with the performance of a toolbox used in a PC. This constitutes an embedded solution able to recognize VOCs in a reliable way to create application products for a wide variety of industries, which are able to classify data acquired by an electronic nose, as VOCs. With this proposed and implemented algorithm, a precision of 99% for classification was achieved into the embedded solution.


POP-CNN: Predicting Odor's Pleasantness with Convolutional Neural Network

Predicting odor's pleasantness simplifies the evaluation of odors and has the potential to be applied in perfumes and environmental monitoring industry. Classical algorithms for predicting odor's pleasantness generally use a manual feature extractor and an independent classifier. Manual designing a good feature extractor depend on expert knowledge and experience is the key to the accuracy of the algorithms. In order to circumvent this difficulty, we proposed a model for predicting odor's pleasantness by using convolutional neural network. In our model, the convolutional neural layers replace manual feature extractor and show better performance. The experiments show that the correlation between our model and human is over 90% on pleasantness rating. And our model has 99.9% accuracy in distinguishing between absolutely pleasant or unpleasant odors.
