Microsoft's Cortana is saying goodbye to Android and iOS in 2021

Mashable

In an announcement posted on July 31, the company said it would pull the Cortana mobile app from both iOS and Android devices in early 2021. While this is new for American users, Microsoft did a similar scrubbing of mobile Cortana in regions like Canada, Australia, and the U.K back in Jan. 2020. As Mashable tech reporter Alex Perry explained back then, this means that, "your reminders and lists won't work through [mobile Cortana] anymore. They'll still be synced to the Microsoft To Do app, as a minor consolation prize. It's also being integrated into Microsoft 365 apps."

The Hello World of Machine Learning in Python

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning is simply a computer learning from data instead of following a recipe. It's meant to mimic how people (and perhaps other animals) learn while still being grounded in mathematics. This post is meant to get you started with a basic machine learning model. Now, we're not re-creating Alexa, Siri, Cortana, or Google Assistant but we are going to create a brand new machine learning program from scratch. This course is meant to be easy assuming you know a bit of Python Programming.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update review: Microsoft boosts Linux and Your Phone, but Cortana slips hard

PCWorld

Update, 05/27/2020: Microsoft launched the May 2020 update on May 27, through manual download first, or you can just wait for Microsoft to push it to your PC. Our review of Microsoft's Windows 10 20H1 update--also known as version 2004, or the Windows 10 May 2020 Update--shows an OS focused primarily on building out existing features, rather than launching new ones. Some scaffolding is still apparent in tweaks to Your Phone, and especially Cortana. Microsoft has further polished Task Manager, Settings, and Game Bar, however, and isn't afraid to serve niche audiences with upgrades to the Windows Subsystem for Linux and the related Terminal app. As in the past, we've based our review on the Insider builds of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, beginning with the major features and working through to its minor additions.

Microsoft continues its productivity-aide push with the new Cortana app for Windows 10 2004

ZDNet

As Microsoft begins rolling out its Windows 10 2004/May 2020 Update, the company also will be delivering its new "Cortana experience" simultaneously. This new, separate Cortana app, available for Windows 10 starting with this feature update, is all about using natural language (voice or typing activated) to handle more productivity tasks. Microsoft revealed officially earlier this year that it would be delivering Cortana as a standalone app starting with the Windows 10 2004/May 2020 Update. This app, which will be able to be updated independently of the underlying operating system, will allow users to check their schedule, set reminders, add Microsoft ToDo tasks and more. Starting May 27, the new Cortana app will be generally available in English for those with the publicly available Windows 10 2004/May 2020 update.

A Survey on Edge Intelligence

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis in locations close to where data is captured based on artificial intelligence. The aim of edge intelligence is to enhance the quality and speed of data processing and protect the privacy and security of the data. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this paper, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey on the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, namely edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading, based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare and analyse the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, etc. This survey article provides a comprehensive introduction to edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarise the development of the emerging research field and the current state-of-the-art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical solutions.

Microsoft's Cortana never conquered Amazon's Alexa, but this analyst thinks it has a bright future in the workplace

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft made bold moves this year to position its voice assistant Cortana for enterprise customers, analyst Raul Castanon-Martinez said, and is uniquely poised to overtake competitors Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant in the workplace. Castanon-Martinez's firm 451 Research estimates voice user interfaces and digital assistants are among the top technologies organizations will adopt in the next two years – and Microsoft is in the best position to gain their business, he said. "Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant dominate the market on the consumer side, but Microsoft has a leg up in the enterprise, given its dominant position with its productivity and collaboration product portfolios," Castanon-Martinez said. Competition in the workplace is the latest development in the relationship between Alexa and Cortana. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier this year said the company no longer sees Cortana as a competitor to Amazon's Alexa.

YouTube Music gets Siri and desktop web app support

#artificialintelligence

YouTube Music is getting a pair of small but helpful updates today: full support for Siri, and support for being installed as a desktop web app. If you're on an iOS device, you'll now be able to ask Siri to play songs straight from YouTube Music. For the longest time, Siri only supported Apple's own music sources. But in iOS 13, Apple added the ability for Siri to tap into third-party apps with a long-overdue update. Spotify added support for this feature earlier this month, and now YouTube is following suit with support from its own music streaming service.
