Microsoft's AI generates voices that sing in Chinese and English


Researchers at Zhejiang University and Microsoft claim they've developed an AI system -- DeepSinger -- that can generate singing voices in multiple languages by training on data from music websites. In a paper published on the preprint, The work -- like OpenAI's music-generating Jukebox AI -- has obvious commercial implications. Music artists are often pulled in for pick-up sessions to address mistakes, changes, or additions after a recording finishes. AI-assisted voice synthesis could eliminate the need for these, saving time and money on the part of the singers' employers.

However, a new study has described how its status in science fact could actually be employed as another, and perhaps unlikely, form of entertainment -- live music. Dr Alexis Kirke, Senior Research Fellow in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research at the University of Plymouth (UK), has for the first time shown that a human musician can communicate directly with a quantum computer via teleportation. The result is a high-tech jamming session, through which a blend of live human and computer-generated sounds come together to create a unique performance piece. Speaking about the study, published in the current issue of the Journal of New Music Research, Dr Kirke said: "The world is racing to build the first practical and powerful quantum computers, and whoever succeeds first will have a scientific and military advantage because of the extreme computing power of these machines. This research shows for the first time that this much-vaunted advantage can also be helpful in the world of making and performing music. No other work has shown this previously in the arts, and it demonstrates that quantum power is something everyone can appreciate and enjoy."

YouTube is rolling out its "SmartReply" technology to YouTube, meaning that comments you see on the site might not actually have been written by a human. The technology analyses messages and then uses artificial intelligence to guess what a person might want to say in response to them. Users can then select that response and post it, without ever having to write anything out for themselves. It has already appeared within Gmail and Android's Messages app, and is open to developers who can integrate it within their own app. But it is now coming to YouTube, which represents the most public place any messages written by the SmartReply software will be seen.

Identifying a melody by studying a musician's body language


We listen to music with our ears, but also our eyes, watching with appreciation as the pianist's fingers fly over the keys and the violinist's bow rocks across the ridge of strings. When the ear fails to tell two instruments apart, the eye often pitches in by matching each musician's movements to the beat of each part. A new artificial intelligence tool developed by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab leverages the virtual eyes and ears of a computer to separate similar sounds that are tricky even for humans to differentiate. The tool improves on earlier iterations by matching the movements of individual musicians, via their skeletal keypoints, to the tempo of individual parts, allowing listeners to isolate a single flute or violin among multiple flutes or violins. Potential applications for the work range from sound mixing, and turning up the volume of an instrument in a recording, to reducing the confusion that leads people to talk over one another on a video-conference calls.

Generating compositions in the style of Bach using the AR-CNN algorithm in AWS DeepComposer


AWS DeepComposer gives you a creative way to get started with machine learning (ML) and generative AI techniques. AWS DeepComposer recently launched a new generative AI algorithm called autoregressive convolutional neural network (AR-CNN), which allows you to generate music in the style of Bach. In this blog post, we show a few examples of how you can use the AR-CNN algorithm to generate interesting compositions in the style of Bach and explain how the algorithm's parameters impact the characteristics of the generated composition. The AR-CNN algorithm provided in the AWS DeepComposer console offers a variety of parameters to generate unique compositions, such as the number of iterations and the maximum number of notes to add to or remove from the input melody to generate unique compositions. The parameter values will directly impact the extent to which you modify the input melody.
