When the ear fails to tell two instruments apart, the eye often pitches in by matching each musician's movements to the beat of each part. A new artificial intelligence tool developed by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab leverages the virtual eyes and ears of a computer to separate similar sounds that are tricky even for humans to differentiate. The tool improves on earlier iterations by matching the movements of individual musicians, via their skeletal keypoints, to the tempo of individual parts, allowing listeners to isolate a single flute or violin among multiple flutes or violins. Potential applications for the work range from sound mixing, and turning up the volume of an instrument in a recording, to reducing the confusion that leads people to talk over one another on a video-conference calls.

AWS DeepComposer gives you a creative way to get started with machine learning (ML) and generative AI techniques. AWS DeepComposer recently launched a new generative AI algorithm called autoregressive convolutional neural network (AR-CNN), which allows you to generate music in the style of Bach. In this blog post, we show a few examples of how you can use the AR-CNN algorithm to generate interesting compositions in the style of Bach and explain how the algorithm's parameters impact the characteristics of the generated composition. The AR-CNN algorithm provided in the AWS DeepComposer console offers a variety of parameters to generate unique compositions, such as the number of iterations and the maximum number of notes to add to or remove from the input melody to generate unique compositions. The parameter values will directly impact the extent to which you modify the input melody.

The feature, rolled out in partnership with AI music startup Mubert, will generate an instrumental track in any of more than two dozen musical styles designed to match the mood of a given clip. Trained on a library of over 1 million beats, samples and patterns, the system also has the benefit of being completely royalty-free, since each snippet it generates is a wholly original composition. "AI, of course, cannot replace human imagination, but it will become the new virtual creative assistant that will expand and fine-tune one's overall skills," PicsArt CEO Hovhannes Avoyan said. "In time, we'll begin to see more novice users being able to produce vastly superior content than they ever thought possible because of AI." Among the genres of music offered by the feature are "techno," "lofi" and "dub" as well as mood-based styles including"happy" or "romantic" and activity-based ones such as "study" or "yoga."
The EU has opened a major investigation into Apple over concerns that it uses its platforms unfairly. The EU commission will pursue antitrust investigations against the company over its App Store and Apple Pay products, which critics argue have stifled competition. The Commission said it was investigating Apple Pay over allegations the tech giant wields its control over the Pay platform to force developers into using it over others. It said a preliminary investigation had raised concerns that "Apple's terms, conditions, and other measures related to the integration of Apple Pay" may "distort competition and reduce choice and innovation". In addition, the EU Commission announced it had opened a second investigation into concerns that the firm's App Store restricts developers from informing iPhone and iPad users of alternative purchasing possibilities, instead pushing "mandatory use of Apple's own proprietary in-app purchase system".
