Qualcomm launches RB5 robotic platform, aims to expand industrial, commercial deployments

Qualcomm is launching the RB5 robotics platform and new robotics developer kit to speed up industrial applications as well as infuse them with 5G connectivity. The company four years ago made a big pushing into robotics with the aim to leverage its connectivity hardware and research and development and build out its business-to-business efforts. Qualcomm's strategy revolved around building a platform that could apply to $200 toy robots as well as $2 million industrial robots, said Dev Singh, head of robotics, drones and intelligent machines at Qualcomm. "In the field, we have millions of robots powered by Qualcomm technology," said Singh, who added that NASA's latest Mars robot launching July 17 has Snapdragon 801 on board the rover. Microsoft and Sony to create smart camera solutions for AI-enabled image sensor ZDNet

Sony and Microsoft have joined together to create artificial intelligence-powered (AI) smart camera solutions to make it easier for enterprise customers to perform video analytics, the companies announced. Announced last week, the IMX500 is the world's first image sensor to contain a pixel chip and logic chip. The logic chip, called Sony's digital signal processor, is dedicated to AI signal processing, along with memory for the AI model. "Video analytics and smart cameras can drive better business insights and outcomes across a wide range of scenarios for businesses," said Takeshi Numoto, corporate vice president and commercial chief marketing officer at Microsoft. "Through this partnership, we're combining Microsoft's expertise in providing trusted, enterprise-grade AI and analytics solutions with Sony's established leadership in the imaging sensors market to help uncover new opportunities for our mutual customers and partners." Sony and Microsoft also announced that they will create a smart camera managed app powered by Azure Internet of Things (IoT) and cognitive services that it hopes to use alongside the IMX500 sensor to provide new video analytics use cases for enterprise customers.

While this could please teachers worried that students will use apps on their calculator to cheat during exams, enthusiasts are, unsurprisingly, mad. It reduces the control programmers have over their calculator apps.

Sony develops first image sensor combined with AI chip

Sony has announced it has developed the world's first image sensor equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) processing. The new image sensor has a configuration consisting of a pixel chip and logic chip. The logic chip, called Sony's digital signal processor (DSP), is dedicated to AI signal processing, along with memory for the AI model. According to Sony, the DSP eliminates the need for additional hardware, such as high-performance processors or external memory, making it "ideal for edge AI systems". By using AI, Sony said the sensor is also able to output metadata -- semantic information belonging to image data -- instead of image information, which reduces data volume and addresses privacy concerns.


Sony's new image sensors will make cameras smarter with onboard AI

For years, the evolution of image sensors has been about packing in more pixels and slimming down their size to fit into smaller devices. Now, they're about to get smart. Today, Sony is unveiling the IMX500 and IMX501, two 12.3-megapixel sensors with onboard AI processing chips. They'll be able to handle "light" machine learning tasks -- like recognizing if a stray dog or cat enters your backyard -- on their own, without sending any video to the cloud or another system. Instead, they can deliver anonymous metadata pings to alert you about what they've seen.
