ICYMI: Amazon made its first drone-powered delivery

Engadget

Today on In Case You Missed It: Amazon has been testing drone deliveries for three years now, even having to move to the UK to keep it going once the FAA changed its UAV guidelines. The company released a video of its first fully autonomous drone delivery, which happened on December 7. Meanwhile a team of researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory dug into what would happen if a sizable meteorite hit the ocean and the modeling shows a substantial amount of water vapor would get thrown into the stratosphere, which would not do great things for climate change. Finally, the Danish Neighborhood Watch came out with a robbery-preventing Christmas light and app combination to deter robbers-- and provide laughs for the rest of us. As always, please share any interesting tech or science videos you find by using the #ICYMI hashtag on Twitter for @mskerryd.

The idea is that a drone launched from a vehicle would help guide it by mapping the surrounding area beyond what the car's sensors can detect. This could prove most beneficial for hard to access or poorly mapped regions, where GPS may not be able to map the terrain accurately.

The Morning After: Thursday December 15, 2016

Engadget

This Thursday morning you'll be reading about Yahoo's huge data breach, Amazon's first drone delivery (in time for the holidays!) How do you top a 2014 security breach that leaked info for 500 million accounts? If you're Yahoo, apparently you reveal that another one in 2013 resulted in the theft of info (names, security questions and answers, and more) from over one billion email accounts. Also, the company believes that the unnamed state-sponsored hackers from the 2014 incident were using forged cookies to target specific accounts directly. You always remember your first Amazon's first drone delivery In three years, Prime Air has gone from concept to reality, with Amazon sending its first delivery to a customer in Cambridge, England. Operating autonomously, it completed the order in just 13 minutes.

Amazon Prime Air: 5 Facts About The Company's Drone Delivery System

International Business Times

Amazon announced Wednesday that it had made its first commercial drone delivery. CEO Jeff Bezos revealed in a Tweet that it took 13 minutes from "click to delivery" and that the delivery made to a customer in England is on Amazon's books. Drone deliveries might be in a nascent stage right now, but companies such as Amazon and Domino's have proved with their test deliveries that commercial drone deliveries are a not-so-distant possibility. Drone deliveries take less time than traditional mode of deliveries and seem to be a more convenient way for retailers to make deliveries. Amazon is currently using two of its customers as test subjects, but the company believes that its "Prime Air" service has great potential.

Scientists at LANL used high performance computing to investigate how an asteroid's kinetic energy is transferred to the atmosphere and the ocean. An impact would have devastating effects if it occurred within 10-20 kilometers of a city's coastline, but if it hit out in the middle of the ocean, the massive waves generated by the collision would quickly die down.
