FLIR Duo is an GoPro-sized thermal camera for drones

Engadget

FLIR is no stranger to thermal imagery. It's cameras can be found on everything from industrial gear to the iPhone. The company has also been working with aerial tech for over 20 years, and more recently drones with the Zenmuse XT collaboration with DJI and the FLIR Vue. The FLIR Duo brings that same concept to smaller drones, i.e. the ones that you and I are more likely to own (like the 3DR Solo, or DJI Phantom 2). Essentially, the Duo is a more affordable version of its existing aerial products ($999 compared to the Vue that starts at $1500).

The fisherman's friend: Hi-tech drone can track prey underwater - and even drag your hook to them

Daily Mail - Science & tech

For those who don't have the patience to wait for fish to take the bait, a robotics firm has unveiled a device that finds and attracts them to you. Called the PowerRay, the underwater drone uses a precision remote bait drop and blue-hued fishing lures that basically attaches the fish to the dangling hook. The unmanned vehicle also transmits data, fish alerts and live video feed and photos of the underwater world to the fisherman's smartphone via a companion app. PowerRay uses a precision remote bait drop and blue-hued fishing lures that basically attaches the fish to the dangling hook. 2017 Mainstream Technologies: Drones, Virtual Reality, And Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Now that 2017 has already stepped foot, we can now prep ourselves up for what technology has to offer. The previous year did not disappoint when it comes to technology advancement as we were introduced to multiple gadgets and devices to make our lives more convenient. Now, we do expect that the technologies that were just starting to be popular in 2016 will become rather mainstream in 2017. Last year, DJI, GoPro, and a few other drone makers have introduced lots of new products to the market. This year, more drones are expected to be introduced.

Israel's 'flying car' passenger drone moves closer to delivery

The Japan Times

YAVNE, ISRAEL โ€“ After 15 years of development, an Israeli tech firm is optimistic it will finally get its 1,500 kg (1.5 ton) passenger-carrying drone off the ground and into the market by 2020. The Cormorant, billed as a flying car, is capable of transporting 500 kg (around half a ton) and traveling at 185 km (115 miles) per hour. It completed its first automated solo flight over terrain in November. Its total price is estimated at $14 million. Developers Urban Aeronautics believe the dark green drone, which uses internal rotors rather than helicopter propellers, could evacuate people from hostile environments or allow military forces safe access.

Your next home security system could deploy patrol drones

Engadget

Security cameras are great, but only when they're actually pointed at whatever is going on. Alarm has developed a machine learning algorithm, called the Insights Engine, that continually monitors sensors placed around your property to learn how things are normally run and to quickly identify unexpected events -- say, a break-in or a water leak -- when they occur. If the system does spot something out of the ordinary, it will deploy a swarm of autonomous UAVs built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Flight drone platform to investigate. These little fliers will swarm over the event site and provide live video feeds to your phone. You can also opt in to share that video data with either Alarm.com's

UVify's Draco drone is a racing quad for everyone

Engadget

You might be pretty handy with your DJI Phantom, but flying a racing drone is something else. Most "consumer" drones are programmed to make flying a cinch, but the trade-off is a lack of agility and speed. Racing drones right now is akin to making your own gaming PC: You need to get your hands dirty, know how everything works together and labor over it to get everything optimized. UVify wants to democratize the burgeoning sport of drone racing with Draco. A ready-to-go speedy drone that can hang with the pros.

Amazon set to take on eBay as firm begins allowing users to sell goods in India

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon is set to take on eBay by allowing people to sell their secondhand goods. The program, which is still in its pilot phase, has been launched as'Sell as Individual' and is only available in Bangalore so far. The service includes doorstep pick-up, packing and delivery and will compete with other companies that allow people to sell their used goods such as eBay, Quikr and Olx. The secondhand products are listed on the website and when someone orders it, an Amazon staff visits the seller and collects their product from their home at a time the seller chooses. Sellers are charged 15 cents (10 rupees) for items below $15 (1,000 rupees), 75 cents (50 rupees) for items between $15 and $75 (5,000 rupees), and $1.50 (100 rupees) for items sold at more than $75. Amazon has unveiled a convenience store in Seattle that uses technologies found in self-driving cars to replace cashiers.

This selfie-drone recognizes, finds and auto records its owner

Engadget

Look how happy I am in that photo below. Selfie technology just took a new turn, and I'm evidently not quite sure what to make of it. The source of the photo is Zero Zero's Hover Camera. It's a foldable, lightweight, 4K camera drone that we've seen before. The new trick that helped take this picture, is that I just threw the drone up in the air.

Forbes - Tech

Every year, throngs of industry insiders swarm Las Vegas to explore the future of consumer electronics at the annual CES show. After almost a decade of attending the largest electronics trade show, I've developed a pretty good track record of being able to tell the hype from the real growing buzz. Automotive: CES is now so auto-centric that insiders now call it the "Car Electronics Show." And one thing is certain: in 2017 Self-driving cars will be everywhere.

ISIL ramps up fight with weaponised drones

Al Jazeera

Mosul, Iraq - As fighting raged in eastern Mosul on a recent afternoon, a black Humvee arrived at an Iraqi army command post with a collection of plastics, electronics and rotor blades lashed to its back. Soldiers leaped to unload the cargo, which comprised the remnants of the latest tool in ISIL's armoury: drones. The haul included a number of small devices of the kind favoured by filmmakers and hobbyists, costing a few hundred dollars apiece. But there were also larger, fixed-wing craft fashioned out of corrugated plastic and duct tape, apparently made by the fighters themselves. Since mid-2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group has held Mosul, after sweeping through northern Iraq in a shock offensive.
