ISIS is dropping bombs with drones in Iraq

Popular Science

Because the drones used are commercial models, it likely means that anti-drone weapons already on hand with the American advisors are sufficient to stop them. The Battelle Drone Defender, spotted in Iraq last summer, is a gun-shaped jamming tool that can send some models of drone crashing to the ground. It's part of a growing field of anti-drone countermeasures, many of which focus on radio-frequency jamming to disable the flying machines. It's worth noting that the bomb-dropping drones are just a small part of how ISIS uses the cheap, unmanned flying machines. Other applications include scouts and explosive decoys, as well as one-use weapons.

Israel Hezbollah Latest News: Lebanon Militants Capture Crashed Spy Drone, Escalating Tensions In Region

International Business Times

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah announced Tuesday it had captured a fallen Israeli spy drone near the country's southern border with Israel, escalating tensions between the Iran-backed Shiite Muslim organization and its adversaries in Tel Aviv. Israeli military officials confirmed that a Skylark unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV had crashed Monday in Lebanese territory. The reconnaissance device landed near the town of Alma Shaab, according to Hezbollah-affiliated news outlet Al Manar. The lightweight drone is manufactured by Israeli defense manufacturer Elbeit Systems and costs around $50,000 per unit. The Lebanese Army reportedly attempted to recover the aircraft but was unable to do so due to harsh terrain.

Storage In Consumer Electronics

Forbes - Tech

The 2017 CES show featured the latest in consumer products and services. The CES show featured Virtual and Augments Reality, 3D printing, Artificial intelligence with voice recognition and automated vehicles, high resolution and high dynamic range displays, health products, robots, toys and just about every other consumer product that you can think of. However one thing that all of these electronic devices have in common is their need for digital storage and memory. Seagate and DJI (the leading Chinese drone manufacturer) announced a strategic partnership to work jointly to solve the data demands of UAV users. As drone cameras gain resolution and drone flight times grow longer, DJI and Seagate are focusing their efforts to securely and efficiently store, manage, download and share the hundreds of gigabytes of data that can be generated from a single drone mission.

ISIS has converted commercial drones into bombers

Engadget

As Iraqi Security Forces attempt to drive ISIS out of Mosul, a large city in Northern Iraq that the terrorist organization has occupied since 2014, it's facing an arsenal of improvised, experimental weapons. One of ISIS' newest hand-made weapons is the armed drone: a commercial quadcopter equipped with the ability to drop grenade-size explosives. It's well-known that ISIS uses weaponized drones, but new images out of Mosul confirm that the group is now using the quadcopters as bombers as well as single-mission vehicles. Kurdish media network Rudaw reported last week that the explosive-dropping drones have killed civilians and damaged equipment. So far, ISIS has not used these drones to deliver chemical weapons, Rudaw said.

Nasa releases animation showing the airflow around drones

Daily Mail - Science & tech

We've all seen a drone flying around at some point or another, but seeing what it actually does to the air around it is something else entirely. Researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center in California have used computer models to create an animation of the air flow around a quadcopter drone. They developed the animation for the DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter - a battery-powered drone with four rotors. For years, NASA has used similar computer models to simulate the flow of air around aircraft to improve the performance of the vehicles of the future. The phantom drone relies on four rotors to generate enough thrust to lift it up into the air. The animation revealed the complex movements of the air caused by the interaction of the drones rotors and its X-shaped frame.

Gunfire rattles Tehran as drone buzzes over Iran

FOX News

TEHRAN, Iran โ€“ Sustained gunfire rang out over central Tehran on Monday afternoon as anti-aircraft guns targeted what officials said was a drone flying over the Iranian capital. Many residents ran to rooftops and craned their necks to see what was happening. Others sought shelter as bursts of machine gun fire echoed through the streets. The semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted Tehran Governor Isa Farhadi as saying that the gunfire targeted a drone near restricted airspace in the capital. It wasn't clear who owned the drone, which he described as a quadcopter. That suggests it may have been operated by a local hobbyist or aerial photographer rather than a foreign government.

Airbus will test prototype for self-FLYING taxi this year

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Last year, Airbus unveiled its plans to create a fleet of self-flying taxis to help commuters avoid the ever-growing issue of traffic during rush-hour. And it seems that we might not have to wait long to hail a flying car. Airbus has revealed that it plans to test its first single-person prototype by the end of 2017. Selfie drone manufacturer sued over allegations it misled customers

The Guardian

Lily Robotics, the defunct manufacturer of the world's first "selfie drone", is being sued over allegations that it faked product shots and misled consumers about the capability of its prototype devices. The lawsuit alleges that videos on Lily's website, presented as though they had been taken by the drone, were in fact shot by a mixture of GoPro cameras and DJI drones, a competitor model that costs up to four times as much and requires a skilled filmmaker to manually control the camera. The San Francisco District Attorney's (SFDA) office filed the case on Thursday, the day after Lily announced it was shutting down and refunding customers who had pre-ordered its drone at prices ranging from $499 to $899. Promotional videos detailed a number of groundbreaking capabilities of the Lily drone: the ability to take off from, and land on, a user's outstretched hand; a waterproof casing to enable water-based launches; and most impressively, autopilot mode that could allow the drone to follow the user at a set distance and automatically film them. In the videos, a drone operating under the autopilot setting was shown following people engaged in extreme sports such as snowboarding and white water kayaking.

Canada may have delivery drones in service by late 2017

Engadget

Don't look now, but Canada might just join the likes of France and the UK in ushering in the courier drone era. Transport Canada has approved its first drone test range near the tiny village of Foremost, Alberta, clearing the way for Drone Delivery Canada to launch a robotic cargo service as soon as late 2017. The roughly 927 square miles will help DDC prove that its drones can haul goods across long distances using satellite guidance. Tests with the company's early partners should start sometime in the first quarter of the year. The drone delivery system could be more important for Canada than it would be for other nations.
