A new neural network being built by a Danish startup called UIzard Technologies IVS has created an application that can transform raw designs of graphical user interfaces into actual source code that can be used to build them. It uses cutting-edge machine learning technologies to create a neural network that can generate code automatically when it's fed with screenshots of a GUI. Pix2Code can create GUIs from screenshots with an accuracy of 77 percent, but that will improve as the algorithm learns more, the founder said. Beltramelli has already shared some of the details about his technology on GitHub, and plans to make the full source code for Pix2Code available later this year.

New research, though, is showing how an AI powered by a neural network could revolutionize the way player avatars animate realistically through complicated game environments in real time. "The weights of the neural network represent something like different components that make up a pose, and the input ends up producing something like a weighted sum of these components," Holden explains. While other animation methods can blend different motion capture "scenes" into combined animation for new situations, those methods tend to require storing large databases locally, and they can slow down a system. The system managed to learn how to handle this situation though, Holden said, by combining animations from crouching on flat terrain with those of walking or running over rough terrain.
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and Method Studios put together a machine learning system that feeds on motion capture clips showing various kinds of movement. Machine learning has been brought to this space before, but as the team shows in the video, the systems produced were pretty rudimentary, showing the wrong type of movement or skipping animations because they weren't sure which to use -- or deciding too strongly for an animation state and producing jittery motion. "Since our method is data-driven, the character doesn't simply play back a jump animation, it adjusts its movements continuously based on the height of the obstacle," the researchers say in a video describing the new method. That could mean less grunt work for animators and more natural-looking movements for characters we play as.
