Why Would Anyone Fear a Self-Driving Car?

The Atlantic

"Planes fly roughly 99 percent of the miles that they fly by computer. It's now to the place that it is not safe for humans to fly in a lot of conditions. If you could have a robotic surgeon that makes one mistake in 10,000, or a human that made one mistake in 1,000, are you really going to go under the knife with the human? As a counterpoint, however, there are lots of Americans who choose to drive rather than fly, fearing the latter more despite knowing that it is statistically much safer.

The information now joins financial data and "revenge porn" in the categories that get scrubbed.

How AI will play a major role in the auto industry

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, blending data and advanced algorithms to mimic the cognitive functions of the human mind, have begun to simplify and enhance even the simplest aspects of our everyday experiences -- and the automotive industry is no exception. While self-driving cars and complex decision-making are the prime use cases for modern AI, the auto industry continues to search for new ways to engage customers through existing and new channels. Machine learning methods are particularly applicable when it comes to powering new insights within the auto industry because the data sets are large, diverse, and change quickly. Given the vast selection of cars and finance providers available, machine learning has the potential to help car buyers quickly find the vehicles and financing options that are right for them, vastly simplifying their customer journey.

Self-Driving Car Testing: Waymo, Avis Budget Group Partner On Arizona Fleet

International Business Times

Waymo announced Monday car rental company Avis Budget Group would help manage its fleet of self-driving cars in the state, Bloomberg reported. As part of the partnership, Avis facilities in Arizona will provide physical maintenance for Waymo's fleet of cars, including tasks like tire and oil changes, but will not care for self-driving hardware on the car like its Lidar sensors for environmental detection. The stock price for Avis Budget Group, the parent company of companies including Avis and Zipcar, jumped to a high of $29.14 per share on news of the partnership. Earlier this year, Waymo announced a collaborative partnership with ride-hailing service Lyft that generally will focus on autonomous driving research and testing.

Amazon patents beehive-like structure to house delivery drones in cities

The Guardian

The application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, which was written in 2015 and published last week, included a number of drawings of drones flying in and out of tall cylinder-shaped buildings that Amazon wants to locate in central metropolitan areas. The buildings would also allow for traditional vehicle deliveries and could possibly include a self-service location for customers to pick up items in person. If Amazon moves forward with its vision of urban drone centers outlined in the patent application, the Seattle-based corporation could also likely face a range of obstacles in the regulation of the nascent industry of commercial drones – including attempts to control their movement and local zoning and development laws. The company also made headlines last year with a patent for flying warehouses, called "airborne fulfillment centers", that could be located above metropolitan areas, functioning like giant airships coordinating drone deliveries.
