Mathematicians Decode the Surprising Complexity of Cow Herds

This new study scales that up to explore how multiple cows with their multiple states interact to create crowd dynamics--the so-called emergent properties of cow biology. Their simulations showed that entropy drives simple pyramidal shapes called tetrahedra to spontaneously assemble into a quasicrystal--a spatial pattern so complex that it never exactly repeats. Glotzer's team can reverse-engineer the shape of the microscopic building blocks that will assemble themselves into the desired form. We typically think entropy means disorder, and so a disordered structure would have more entropy than an ordered structure.

When the artist Thomas Jackson began working on "Emergent Behavior," in 2011, he started with found objects. In the color palette of a birthday party, Jackson's bits of plastic and rubber evoke schools of fish that move like ink in the water, or birds streaking the sky. The flocks in Jackson's pictures are so cheeky and vibrant, so artificial and yet so full of apparent animal instinct, that it's hard to believe a photographer could have created the tableaux without an assist from digital editing. "Emergent Behavior" will open at the Miller Yezerski Gallery, in Boston, on November 18th, and will be on display through December 23rd.

"An Introduction to Agent-based Modeling" is a well-written and honest look at the benefits and limitations of agent-based modeling. Agent-based modeling demonstrates that agents acting of their own accord will collectively self-organize into predictable macro-behavior (a concept that's similar to Adam Smith's invisible hand theory). The authors are honest enough to admit that agent-based modeling is not predictive (it's too determinant on the algorithms and parameters that humans assign the model), but it can be a powerful tool for education and communication. There are of course a lot of limitations to this book, and there are a lot of questions that the book doesn't answer.
