That's why we decided to create a new, detailed index to track popular open-source software projects, and gain some insights into the new companies powered by these technologies. We focused on projects in enterprise IT-related areas like IT operations, including technology powering operating and provisioning systems; data and analytics, including tools for artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as databases; and DevOps, which includes projects focused on the hot new trend of "containers," which help people develop software quickly in a sort of self-contained environment. Overall project rating represents the geometric mean of two of the four individual scores, which reflect online discussion activity; search activity; jobs impact; and GitHub activity. Another hot area for open source is "continuous integration and continuous delivery," or the ability to write software with code that continuously and seamlessly integrates with other platforms.
Researchers have found that dogs and 2-year-old children perform with similar success on cooperative communication tasks, both outperforming chimpanzees – one of our closest living relatives. Sociologists have begun to explore the gains for theory and research that might be achieved by artificial intelligence technology: symbolic processors, expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms, and classifier systems. The first major accomplishments of artificial social intelligence (ASI) have been in the realm of theory, where these techniques have inspired new theories as well as helping to render existing theories more rigorous. Two application areas for which ASI holds great promise are the sociological analysis of written texts and data retrieval from the forthcoming Global Information Infrastructure. To take advantage of the opportunities offered by ASI, sociologists will have to become more computer literate and will have to reconsider the place of programming and computer science in the sociological curriculum.
But when something is not part of your main business it can help to open source the code, which can then be improved. These days open sourcing software is a trend that even large hedge funds such as AHL and AQR in the US taking part in. He was ahead of the curve in this respect, starting to look at what could be called alternative data sources back in 2008. While he was at Lehman he wrote a paper on using Google search data for trading currencies – something which had not been considered by many people at that time.
Krakauer says he is more concerned about the immediate threat of something he calls "Competitive Cognitive Artifacts." People who use the abacus actually learn to make calculations in their brains outside the presence of an abacus. I'm afraid that even prior to creating generalized artificial intelligence we will be developing, to use Dr. Krakauer's term, competitive cognitive artifacts that will rob us of our social skills. In a nod to the recursion that I learned in my undergraduate CS classes, perhaps we need to first create an artificial intelligence specifically designed to control artificial intelligence.
Back in August, the Obama Administration announced a new policy that requires 20 percent of the federal government's software projects be open source. Those projects include the White House Facebook chat bot, Data.gov and the "We the People" petitions API. "It's a step we took to enable the brightest minds inside and outside of government to work together to ensure that federal code is reliable and effective," explains US Chief Information Officer Tony Scott in a blog post. In addition to streamlining software use in the federal government, the White House wants Code.gov and the wider open-source requirement to push state and local government to boost their services.
A week ago, I received a request for refereeing a paper for the Journal of Open Source Software, which I have never seen (or heard of) before. The concept is quite interesting with a scope much broader than statistical computing (as I do not know anyone in the board and no-one there seems affiliated with a Statistics department). Papers are very terse, describing the associated code in one page or two, and the purpose of refereeing is to check the code. Red Hat Inc.'s share price plunged in after-hours trading Wednesday following the open source software developer's announcements it was acquiring internet technology company 3scale for an undisclosed amount and buying back 1 billion worth of stock. In also delivering its fiscal first-quarter financial report after the market close Wednesday, Red Hat beat the FactSet estimate on revenue and met it on earnings per share (EPS). In its last fiscal year, Red Hat became the first open source company to generate more than 2 billion in sales. In its latest quarter, Red Hat reported 61.2 million in profit for the three months ended May 31, up from 48.1 million in the comparable period last year.
Mozilla has launched the Secure Open Source (SOS) Fund to give open-source software developers the revenue to pay for security audits. Chris Riley, Head of Public Policy at Mozilla said on Thursday the SOS fund, part of the Mozilla Open Source Support program (MOSS), will be made available to applicants which need assistance in improving the security of their open-source projects. Mozilla has allocated 500,000 in initial funding, which "will cover audits of some widely-used open source libraries and programs," according to the organization. In these audits, Mozilla's security team discovered a total of 43 bugs, including one critical vulnerability and two important issues within a popular image file format.
The Apache Hadoop project develops open-source software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing. Learn the fundamental principles behind it, and how you can use its power to make sense of your Big Data. Learning Hadoop is very much required. Big Data is the fastest growing technology industries in the world.
