COVID-19 is a pandemic of an emerging infectious disease, called coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which first appeared in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, before spreading around the world on a very large scale. The continued rise in the number of positive COVID-19 cases has disrupted the health care system in many countries, creating a lot of stress for governing bodies around the world, hence the need for a rapid way to identify cases of this disease. Medical imaging is a widely accepted technique for early detection and diagnosis of the disease which includes different techniques such as Chest X-ray (CXR), Computed Tomography (CT) scan, etc.

Doctors in China Are Using AI to Screen COVID-19 Patients

Doctors in China have been given a new powerful tool to help them quickly diagnose potential coronavirus sufferers. Called inferVISION, this AI-based software can quickly highlight potential problem cases in record time. A team of physicians in Wuhan, China, at the Zhongnan Hospital are using GPU-accelerated software to detect the visual signs of COVID-19. This AI-based software relies on NVIDIA GPUs for both training and inference and is alleviated the pressure on overworked staff to screen patients for the virus. The software is greatly helping medical staff to prioritize those who are likely to have contracted the virus. The software has been developed by a Beijing-based startup called inferVISION.

Artificial intelligence can outperform humans in designing futuristic weapons, according to a team of Chinese naval researchers who say they have developed the world's smallest yet most powerful coilgun. The prototype weapon developed by professor Zhang Xiao and her team at the Naval University of Engineering in Wuhan has a 12cm (4.5-inch) barrel, about the size of a pistol, which contains three battery-powered coils that generate an electromagnetic field.


China doubles down on COVID-zero strategy

An expansive compound of buildings covering the equivalent of 46 football pitches was recently erected on the outskirts of Guangzhou, China's bustling southern metropolis. The sprawling complex of three-storey buildings contains some 5,000 rooms and is the first of what is expected to be a chain of quarantine centres built by the Chinese government to house people arriving from overseas as it forges ahead with its zero-tolerance approach to COVID. The compound is equipped with "5G communication technology and artificial intelligence" infrastructure, and each room, which can host only one person at a time, has cameras at its door and a robot delivery system to "minimise human contact and the risk of cross-infection", according to the introduction to the centre put out by the Guangzhou government. It took the construction team less than three months to finish the project – in an echo of the Huoshenshan and Leishenshan temporary hospitals that were built in record time in the central city of Wuhan as COVID-19 took hold in early 2020. But while those hospitals were greeted with relief, the appearance of the quarantine centre nearly two years after the trauma of Wuhan has left some wondering why China is not relaxing its virus strategy now that the vast majority of its one billion people have been fully vaccinated. They're building more facilities but there is no indication the authorities plan to ease the restrictions that have effectively ended international travel for people in China.

AraCOVID19-SSD: Arabic COVID-19 Sentiment and Sarcasm Detection Dataset

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious respiratory disease that was first discovered in late December 2019, in Wuhan, China, and then spread worldwide causing a lot of panic and death. Users of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have been focused on reading, publishing, and sharing novelties, tweets, and articles regarding the newly emerging pandemic. A lot of these users often employ sarcasm to convey their intended meaning in a humorous, funny, and indirect way making it hard for computer-based applications to automatically understand and identify their goal and the harm level that they can inflect. Motivated by the emerging need for annotated datasets that tackle these kinds of problems in the context of COVID-19, this paper builds and releases AraCOVID19-SSD a manually annotated Arabic COVID-19 sarcasm and sentiment detection dataset containing 5,162 tweets. To confirm the practical utility of the built dataset, it has been carefully analyzed and tested using several classification models.
