Dr. Lawrence L. Weed is most widely credited for developing the first electronic medical record, the so-called Problem-Oriented Medical Information System (Promis), starting in 1969, while he was working at the the University of Vermont.

But I.B.M., in a joint project with the Akron Children’s Hospital, had a experimental system in place and working years earlier. The planning began in 1961, and the initiative was announced on Feb. 18, 1962, 50 years ago on Saturday.
